AiR Brig-Glis Project 2019

Frauen. Private Welten. Öffentliches Leben. (Women. Private worlds. Public lives.), is the project developed by the artist during her three months stay in Brig.
The photographer is concerned about the opposition or juxtaposition of the private and the public, which are perceived as different and yet often intertwined in daily life. Today, the creative-productive role of women is particularly evident outside home, although the traditional role of women is still strongly focused on the domestic space.
The photographer entered into dialogue with the interested parties and involved them all in a joint project. Women met Valeria Alves da Florencia in the guest studio next to the Fernanda of Stockalperhaus, the guest residence. www.residence-brig-glis.ch (…)
The artist undertakes to respect the privacy and to integrate photos, which are created, only with the consent of the respective person in the project.”

THE INSTALLATION

The exhibition was structured in five blocks.

The first two, “Sie und die Erfahrung” and “Sie und die Anderen”, referred to the specific work done in the atelier with the local women.

“Sie und die Erfahrung” (Them and their experience) contemplated a space where my photographic work done in the atelier was exhibited as video projection, and an installation with the works done by the women themselves.

“Sie und die Anderen” (Them and the others) was part of the genealogical art work that I carried out from the deepening of the interviews with women. I requested images of their ancestors, took the references of their favorite natural elements (from their own land), and made a series of mixed-media wall art with multiple exposure photographs taken in the atelier.

The following blocks, “Du. Die Erfahrung. Die Anderen” (You. The experience. The others) and “Du” (You), put the attendee in the situation of experiencing something of what women experienced in the atelier during my work with them.

In this case, “Du. Die Erfahrung. Die Anderen”, proposed a device made of carved wood that invited attendees to experience blindly, sensory, placing their hands inside the device, using the sense of touch to “read” the proposed ideas.

The concepts of Time, Personal space and how to handle the view of the Others towards oneself where part of the experience of this stage. Private and Public spaces intertwined.

The next block, “Du”, proposed a device made of a projector that was turned on only when the attendee was positioned in front, with a pedal drive, after which some essential questions worked with women in the atelier were projected on them. Only the person positioned in front of the projector could read those questions.

The message was intended to be read as Personal, Individual, Private.

The fifth block, in a separate room, proposed a video projection with a selection of images from my parallel project “Tagebuch der Residenz: Alpenstimmung” (Residence Diary: Alps mood), which reflected my personal perception as artist and person living for the first time surrounded by snowed mountains.

The goal of this exhibition project was not only to show the work done during my stay, but to induce attendees to experience a little of what I proposed to women in my work with them.

In this way, the attendee went from being a simple viewer to being a protagonist.

The preparation of this exhibition project took approximately 30 days.

It was planned as a global, sequenced exhibition, so that it would also demonstrate the course of the artistic process that I experienced during my stay.
